Album review: Jane’s Party “Hot Noise”

by Matt Caprioli

From an holistic view, everything the four men of Jane’s Party do is quite lovable. They’re Canadian. They’re handsome. They’re talented. One of their videos features them entirely in animal costumes, drinking Stella Artois. Their 2011 EP received generally positive reviews for its upbeat and memorable lyrics. But their full-length debut, Hot Noise, is surprisingly tepid. The album is like rocking in a hammock; a pretty enjoyable experience, but one you won’t remember a year from now.  “Til you got yours” is their first single, and unlike most of the album, it has an edge that makes it distinct. Along with “Dutch Blue Sky”, it contains lyrics and chords powerful enough to encourage a good sing-along. “Dutch Blue Sky” also mixes numerous genres to approach an original sound.

Hot Noise has some surprises, but not enough to save the album from monotony. When the band takes turn showcasing the drummer or lead guitarist, the effects are memorable, but unfortunately, that rarely happens. With the exception of “Dutch Blue Sky,” the album is locked in cruise control. It’s a pleasant drive, but one that will lull you to sleep.

“Hideaway” is a notable track, with more passionate playing. Their talent is clear to see in the acoustic version, which leads me to the assumption that they’re a band who may be a lot better live.

The album’s title track “Hot Noise Part 1” and “Hot Noise Part 2” don’t provide a clear focal point for the album. “Hot Noise” is indeed hot noise, but the kind you may hear on a crowded beach when the spot you picked is too close to the highway.

Jane’s Party clearly has talent. Now all they need is inspiration.
